The many reviews on the product are quite accurate in my opinion. It has been working well for me for about 6 months now with no problems. It is similar to another unit that I got from Sears in the 80's that lasted more than 10 years, although the fan did get a bit noisy as the unit got older. This design seem to improve on some small weak points of the previous version that I had. I like the plastic water holder as it is light and not so prone to being dropped as a glass one would be. If you have ever broken a coffee carafe, you know what I mean. i do not notice any "flavor" with th plastic , although I re-bottle the water soon after the distillation is complete. I do think that regular cleaning, at least partial cleaning, is good to prevent the buildup of the more "stubborn" type of deposit. This will vary, depending on your water source
