Review on Portable Refrigerator Electric Instant Appliance by Mark Toth

Revainrating 5 out of 5

A thoughtful gadget that keeps drinks ice cold.

I was recently wondering if there's a better way to keep a drink cool during the summer months than to thin it down with melting ice? You can use whiskey stones or similar reusable ice cube substitutes, but surely there has to be something more 21st century? And there is! In fact, we've had the technology to do this since 1834 in the form of the Peltier cooler, which uses electricity to create a temperature gradient without moving parts or liquids. In practice: You press the capacitive touch button in front of the thing, and the metal plate in the recess at the top gets cold pretty quickly. Pour your pre-chilled drink into the included aluminum mug and set it on top and it stays cold. I've seen some reviews bemoaning the fact that it doesn't chill a room temperature drink very well, but that's not the thing's fault; Unfortunately, thermodynamics plays against us when it comes to cooling things down or heating things up. While this won't chill a warm drink, it will keep an already cold drink nice and frosty, which is really all I need. My only minor complaint about this thing is the capacitive touch button on the front; again, it is either too sensitive or not sensitive enough. Sometimes it takes a couple of swipes to turn the device on or off and vice versa, sometimes I turn it on by just moving it across the table without touching the button with my finger. However, this hasn't caused me any major problems and doesn't affect performance, so I can handle it with ease. Overall I am very happy with my purchase and look forward to many cold drinks on hot days with this futuristic gadget on my desk.
