Review on Wilton 78A Woodworkers Opening Capacity by Demetrius Holt

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Lasts a lifetime!

My dad was a high school carpentry teacher and had 16 10" wide Wilton vises on 4 large benches for his students to use (and abuse). He bought them in the late 1950s and they have served him throughout his life. entire 35 year career plus another 18-20 years after! They weren't replaced until after the city built a new high school, but I'm sure someone still uses them to this day, LOL! I have the 7" version. those awesome vises, now I want to buy a 10" and will be ordering one like that. fool around and try to clean them all the time. These vises are VERY inexpensive, I can don't understand why they don't sell them anymore, they are built like a tank and very sensible to load. The big advantage of the Wilton vise over other vises is the nifty quick release feature, you just have to turn the handle one turn to the left and the front jaw pops out completely. Just press the jaws directly on the object and turn the handle a few times and it's tight. There is no lever to press or turn the handle 40 times. It saves a lot of time! The jaws will supplied with 2 hardwood blocks have a magnet so they are removable (see pic) the jaw closest to you can rotate (see pic) and there is also a bench avy u nd will most likely require two men (or girls) for installation. We used long range locks to hold the vise while marking and then drilled and bolted. I had to enlarge the hole slightly with a file to fit the recommended lags. It is not worth saving on this tool, EVERY joinery needs a good vice! This is a once-in-a-lifetime purchase that will last for generations. This is not the place to save a few bucks!
