2003 Toyota Corolla CE Direct Ignition Coil

Similar products compatible with the 2003 Toyota Corolla Direct Ignition Coil are between $90 and $120 at retailers such as AutoZone or O'Reilly's Auto Parts. Obviously it was a different brand but since they were 1/4 to 1/3 the price I figured I'd save a dime and take a chance. My Corolla has over 100,000 miles on it and the check engine light came on about 2 weeks ago. I went to AutoZone and they said cylinders 1, 3 and 4 were leaking. They assumed it was spark plugs, wire, or an ignition coil. What was odd was that the seller didn't know that this engine didn't use "spark plug wires" and didn't know that there were four direct ignition coils in the electrical system. They only had a $90 ignition coil. I decided to evaluate the price and ordered these 4 direct ignition coils. They only have a one-year warranty while AutoZone had a lifetime warranty. I also bought an air filter, anti-seize spark plug "grease" and conductive "grease". I was able to remove the motor cover by unscrewing two 10mm screws (and accidentally breaking two plastic plugs). I turned off the spark plugs first. I disconnected, unscrewed and removed all 4 old induction coils with no problems. candles removed. Coat the spark plugs with appropriate grease on both ends. Installed the spark plugs. Added conductive grease to the bottom of the new direct induction coils and they are reassembled/bolted to the motor. Reconnected the cables. He started the engine - and it purred like a kitten. However, the engine light stayed on. I tried turning off the EIS backup(?) for 60 seconds but it did NOT work. I disconnected the battery for 60 seconds, restarted the engine - and now the check engine light is off. HOORAY! :) I have no idea what the quality of these direct ignition coils is - but for a day - the engine sounds great, runs smoother and doesn't have a "rough" idle. Oh yeah, I changed the air filter too. I think I "saved" about $150 in labor and about $270 in parts (360-90 = 270). Only time will tell how long these direct ignition coils will last.
