Review on πŸ”¨ Enhance Your Deck with the Kreg Deck Jig - The Ultimate Deck-building Tool by Kevin Silver

Good design, poor quality

I'm a big fan of Kreg products in general, but this tool is terrible. There are two main disadvantages. The metal guides for drills and screwdrivers are pressed into cheap plastic. This may not be a major issue other than zero play in the Kreg proprietary deck screw guides and screw heads. The screws get stuck in the guides, and the first time I used one of the guides at a 45 degree angle, the screw got stuck so hard that it twisted the metal guide and broke the plastic piece holding it. The second issue is proprietary Kreg screws. Instead of a torx head they use a dumb square head which doesn't hold the bit as well as a torx (probably worse than a phillips head). Because deck screws are stainless steel, their heads are quite soft, so if you manage to slip the screw through the guide into the board, the bit will round off the head of the screw once tightened. Everyone. Lonely. Time. The best workaround is to use a hole drilling tool, then remove it and put another screw in the pre-drilled hole. I am returning all unused screws that I have purchased. I can exit the device until I'm done with this project (if it doesn't self-destruct first). Update: I contacted Craig regarding this and they confirmed there were issues. They send new rails, probably with larger holes. Also, the camo deck screws are slightly smaller and fit broken Kreg rails. To use these screws you just need to use a torx bit long enough to fit through the Kreg tool.

Pros
  • Great overall performance
Cons
  • Protection
