I ordered it because a review mentioned it can work with clawfoot baths. However, when I received it, it seemed impossible. But I've experimented and it worked for me - the trick is you need to add some material between the outer surface of the tub and either side of the clamping surface - about 2.5 inches thick. I used a 2x4 piece of wood and hard rubber blocks. My wife uses the tub every night and since I added this guide she no longer slides out of the tub when getting in or out.
