Starrett Framing Square FS-24

ASIN: B002BWKO3S This square does not show the quality I expect from Starrett tools. The square was not square when it arrived. It's relatively easy to perfect this type of square, but you don't have to use the Starrett tool to do it. In case you don't know this process, it is done by forging (hitting it with a bullet or similar hammer). When the square is sharp (less than 90 degrees), hit the inside of the corner. If blunt, hit outside. This will stretch the metal in the desired direction, bringing the square back to 90 degrees. It's a trial and error process. To test the square, also lay it down on a perfectly straight edge and draw a line on the surface. Flip it over so it goes the opposite direction on the same straight line and draw another line next to the first. If the two lines are parallel, the square is square. Getting back to the square itself. The steel is soft and bends easily, making it easier to snap back into shape, but also means it can be knocked out of shape by dropping it. It's also easy to bend one of the legs so the square doesn't lay flat. This is easy to fix, but the steel needs to be harder. As advertised, the divisions are only 1/8". 32". Some squares also have 1/12" graduations, which can be useful for measuring on a 1 inch = 1 foot scale. The whole square is covered in a thick plastic coating. I assume this is to prevent rusting , but it also gives the square a strange feeling If the coating is to prevent rust, the square will obviously rust after the coating deteriorates or wears out Coating durability because I did not have the angle long enough There are no tables or additional information to the angle Many if not most framing angles have tables stamped or etched on the side giving information on rafter lengths etc. that framing joiners will find useful. This square does not provide the bottom line, there are better squares available for the same price. Do not buy this one ,if i had to redesign i would go with this one:emp ire level e1190 16" x 24" professional square frame, blue or black anodized aluminum. Note that the only non-five-star review for Empire Square comes from someone upset about being given the wrong color.
