Although not many people require RS-232 support these days, for older computers it was the only way to go with them to communicate. It was the perfect solution for connecting to my retro Pico/Elf computer. Compact, functional and versatile. It uses a standard chipset and is therefore supported on many operating systems: Windows, Mac and Linux. Others like FreeBSD should also work (untested).
