Not straight-through

I tried to determine this before ordering but there seemed to be some misleading information (or I was just lazy and guessing). On me for having to look closely at the pinout diagram and compare it to what I needed. Fast forward to unboxing and dice free when I installed it. Direct USB to RS232 options seemed limiting (or expensive) so before sending it back I figured I'd just order a "null modem" adapter. For the record, if you use two null modems together you should get a direct connection as

Ready to use

The driver installed automatically on Win10 and worked immediately. The interface voltages are around -6 and +6 which is good for RS232 and the timing looks good on the oscilloscope (only tested at 9600bps). Correct processing of the DTS/DSR line and correct null modem connection for the connection with the DTE instrument (Agilent 34401A instrument). There were only problems with the client part of Windows. Tera Term fixed the issue (CR vs. LF with PuTTY). Several reviews miss this point: the…

Ham Radio CAT Control - worked for me

Ordered this cable for Yaesu ftdx1200 CAT Control - then I saw all the reviews that this cable is not suitable for ham radio control and quickly found another cable with better reviews in this one respect ordered. Both cables arrived yesterday and I pulled out the one that should work and struggled with it for a couple of hours before deciding to try this one. Plugged it in and it worked the first time. I have to swap for a longer version, but that's my business. Edit: Using this cable with the

Great value for money!: Cables and Connections

A must have for old tech. When you buy an old piece of equipment like a Cisco router or SonicWall firewall, the cables usually don't come with it, they're long lost! Since the DB9 connector is also a thing of the past, you can switch from DB9 to USB with this cable, problem solved!

Fake FTDI chip, no RS232 voltage level

First, it is fake FTDI chip. Vendor and Product ID are FTDI programmed, but the standard Windows 10 FTDI driver does not work with them. They want you to go to their questionable website and download the questionable driver in order to use it. It also doesn't work on Linux with the FTDI kernel driver. The kernel throws an error when trying to initialize it. Second, it looks like it's a TTL output, not RS232, so it doesn't really work with RS232 devices. Wasted time with that.

Just what was needed for a retro COSMAC ELF computer

Although not many people require RS-232 support these days, for older computers it was the only way to go with them to communicate. It was the perfect solution for connecting to my retro Pico/Elf computer. Compact, functional and versatile. It uses a standard chipset and is therefore supported on many operating systems: Windows, Mac and Linux. Others like FreeBSD should also work (untested).

Pros
  • High marks for support and durability from testers
Cons
  • Vulgarity

Conflict with Windows 10

I have been trying to install and use this adapter on two different computers for about 10 hours without success. The driver installs and seems to work, but it doesn't. Removing COM ports, changing COM definitions with RegEdit, reinstalling drivers, etc. didn't help. The COM ports and FTDI drivers can be a bit quirky, but not having success on two different machines seems unusual. The caution is probably justified if you decide to buy this.
