Review on Enhance Performance with B. Ignition Sensor Kit for MerCruiser Thunderbolt I IV Distributor by Gaurav Ansong

Revainrating 1 out of 5

Don't buy spares, buy genuine Mercruiser parts.

Mercruiser 5L engine stopped working but would start, sputter and stall. The decision was made by a friend of the mechanic who went down, started the engine and ran great for 10 minutes and said the engine was fine and it worked fine but he said if it didn't work call him and he will return. We pulled him out and he went. We spoke to him on the phone and drove off to buy a new sensor for the dealer. Bought a REGITAR USA B0784MSV3P Ignition Senor Kit for a Mercuiser Thunderbolt I IV dealer for $45 from Revain and was told we would have it on Monday. I arrived Tuesday, turned on the distributor, and the engine didn't catch fire at all, nothing. Removed and put back the original Mercruiser and it fired and ran but was rough and eventually didn't behave like it used to. I then decided to purchase the original Mercruiser part number which was changed to 87-892150Q02. Ordered on Wednesday, received and delivered on Thursday and now the engine is back to normal and running great. The aftermarket part was purchased from Revain, but the Mercruiser part was not. The Mercuiser part is $61.38 with free shipping. If not I would have had to buy an electronic box which costs over $500. Luckily it was the sensor. First the cap and rotor was swapped out, then the wires were carelessly inserted into the cap so I laid them out nicely and I had to shift the coil wire. When I tried to twist the wire in the spool it came loose and I took it out. It turned out that the wire had broken and the insulation had burned out and a spark jumped through the gap to ignite the engine. I cut out the bad and put it back in the copper connector and put it back in the coil thinking it was my problem and it wasn't. And we decided to buy a non-original sensor that didn't work at all. Hope this helps someone. The photo shows the aftermarket I got for Revain and Mercruiser who worked on the boat.
