My 13 year old son has Attention Deficit Disorder, OCD, Asperger's Syndrome, Anxiety and Sensory Integration Disorder. We tried a lot, including medication, you help with his attention problems. Nothing helped. I heard about HCF from a friend's son's teacher. She (the teacher) has taken HCF and swears by it. I've looked at the ingredients that seem to be good EXCEPT folic acid. I was very disappointed when I saw this. Folic acid (the synthetic version of folic acid) is known to have adverse health effects, particularly in people with MTHFR variants/mutations (which are estimated to affect nearly 50% of the US population). I know this because I have a variant of this gene that inhibits my ability to convert folic acid into folic acid (the form my body can use). Folic acid competes with folic acid for positions at cell receptors and inhibits the cell's ability to absorb bioavailable folate. Other than that, HCF has really impacted my son in a positive way. His teachers report (initially) better attention spans. And he reported feeling "happy" after the first dose. This effect seems to have worn off, so I think we need to increase the dose to get the desired effect. However, I cannot in good conscience continue to give my son some folic acid (full RDA in one dose) as I know how the body handles it and how it blocks the body's ability to absorb it and actually builds it up in the body (because it's difficult for the body is to process folic acid regardless of whether someone has the MTHFR variant). If this company decides to make a methylfolate (5 MTHF) version of this product I will DEFINITELY be buying it again. For now I think this will be a GREAT product that anyone can take (including those with MTHFR variants/mutations). As it stands, I am faced with a difficult decision: should my son continue to take this focus booster product, despite knowing the harmful effects of folic acid, or go back to his old state of lack of focus? I will research other products to find something similar without folic acid.
