I bought this arm to replace the original shower arm on a wall unit shower. The original arm was quite long and was for a rain type head. Personally I don't like a rain shower head and prefer a regular type of shower head. So, I searched for a standard 45 degree replacement arm locally but the issue became that the original arm had about 1" of threads and the replacement ones all had only 1/2". This wouldn't work as the threaded part was too short for this unit. I came up with the idea to buy the adjustable arm and screw a nipple in to the arm and then pass the nipple through the wall unit and mount it. I did have to cut, with a Dremel, a couple of spacers out of a PVC coupler in order to get everything to fit and work properly.This arm seems really sturdy and a nice touch is the female end has a slip connection so it's easy to align things after tightening.I'd noted several other arms don't have this feature.
