What to Expect from a Regular Toothpaste: Doesn't foam, most toothpastes contain an ingredient in sulfate soap that causes foam, as we don't necessarily associate foam with efficacy. SLS, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, a typical ingredient in foam, also acts harshly on gums, causing them to recede, exposing dentin and worsening tooth decay problems. Also, it doesn't have a strong mint flavor, some people prefer it so they can eat afterwards and not have to deal with mint. I like the taste of fresh mint and find it refreshing, but I made my own xylitol mouthwash which is an artificial sweetener that kills harmful bacteria in the mouth. I add peppermint essential oil and essential oils of wintergreen, spearmint and lemon. Here is the recipe. The ingredients last and make a mouthwash for years.
