This is either a granite-like stone or concrete that is light gray, almost white, and has been DYED black on all but the bottom surface. This is not a cosmetic issue, it indicates that the material had to be disguised. Real granite is used for surface plates because it is dimensionally stable and resists wear, who knows what this thing is? In the pictures I uploaded you can see where the rag that was used to apply black stain strayed onto the bottom surface. The picture with the grayish paper towel square shows how the dye can be soaked out of the product with acetone, not possible with real gray or black granite.
