Review on 6" X 18" A Grade Granite Surface Plate - Perfect For Precision Measurement! by Adam Tidd

It’s not the precision block you are looking for.

Ben Kenobi says to keep looking this isn’t the droid you’re looking for. Wish I had better Testimony to say it’s great but this surface plate isn’t any good for checking surfaces for precision. I needed to use to check Sykes for high spots and also so o could have my indicator on it and slide end to end to check for straightness. You can see the comparisons between my level on the bed ways versus the granite and they’re significantly different. I suspect it’s because it’s only finished on one side but then what is the good if you want to set it on a level table and it’s not level? I’m a bit disappointed and had I checked earlier on I would’ve returned it but I had kept it safely crated until I was ready to use it. I guess for a woodworker it’s probably more than enough but for a Machinist this will do you no good so don’t do what I did and look for a decent price. I did however find a cheaper smaller one that is precision both sides even though it’s labeled grade B it’s more accurate than this one. So., do yourself a favor young jedi and Look for precision that’s guaranteed all sides of the block. I may send this out at this point since I now own it and pay to have it precision squared on all sides. Also because the bottom hasn’t been sealed be aware around oils, dirty hands, etc.

Pros
  • Durable construction ensures long-term use
Cons
  • Some may struggle with properly aligning their measurements on the surface plate
