I had some doubts when I read the advertising for this device. But the only alternative was scaffolding, which was a nightmare to erect and had to be hired and transported. This block is adjustable for almost any stair size and is very stable. We have used it with a 16 foot extension ladder but with the 8 foot ladder fully retracted. A longer staircase does not fit in a typical staircase. Also, adjustable ladders like the Little Giant and others sold by Lowe are NOT suitable for this unit as these ladders protrude at the base and are too wide to fit in the Ladder Aide. One person can install this with a ladder, but it's a little easier with a helper. I've used it on bare wooden stairs and Ladder Aide has a rubber surface that makes contact with the stairs so you don't feel any damage to the wood. I don't know if thick carpeted stairs affect stability.
