The metal of the locking mechanism is so brittle that someone could break it very easily. It was opened with no damage to the mailbox paint, indicating very little effort on the part of the thief. My wife and I are very happy with this mailbox. We decided to buy a new lockable mailbox after the mail theft started in our area and my prescription was stolen. It's more secure than others I've looked at, its mail slot is designed so a hand can't get past it like other designs we've looked at.
