Maybe I expected too much. I was looking for a freshwater skimmer similar to the marine. This option worked, but it didn't slide as much, just added bubbles or movement to take the pressure off the water. that I didn't need. It's also very noisy, and if you set it to noise-cancellation, the efficiency drops too. Yes, it works and can be ok for small aquariums, but there are better options when it comes to functionality.

I bought this mainly for the (lack of) colour. My aquarium has no background and my previous surface skimmer was black from afar. Of course not invisible, not even completely transparent, but discreet. I'm surprised by the quality of this product: the plastic is thick, the suction cups stay in place, the current is strong (but you can break it with an accessory) and the floating part always floats the same way as the air chamber is closed. When it works, it seems very stable.

The skimmer works well but you have to stick to the rough pads that come with the kit. I tried replacing it with a thin polypropylene gasket but it clogged the pump. Also, the floating part is too high if you have a standard capped plastic rim and want to keep the water level high. I fixed this by cutting off part of the top and middle tube. I had a problem with a frog bite covering the water surface in my 55 gallon aquarium. I dug it up every week but it grew back until there was no room to throw fish food. This thing is tiny but fixed the problem. At first I had to wash it off several times a day, now I only have to rinse it off once or twice a week. Not bad, very effective if you replace the pad that comes with the filter thread. I have a 7.5 gallon cube and this thing is way bigger than I thought it would be. Takes up a lot of space in the back corner of my tank. But I don't plan on keeping it in the tank all the time. I will only use it when I start seeing a light film on the water surface. This little skimmer works surprisingly well. I often feed my fish frozen food, which causes a weird protein film on the surface the next day. This annoying film doesn't really go away with a water change and is particularly thick on my floating plants. These floating plants also make the process of removing paper towels quite inconvenient. This kid is cool. I paired this with Fluval's chunky CO2 diffuser (20g kit). The small stream of water it ejects creates enough turbulence in the Fluval diffuser to very well dissolve the CO2. In this review I will use this filter with the Aquatop SSK-65 (now $30-40 but bought it in March 2020 for $25) which I have been using for 11 months, to compare. I bought this filter as a cheaper alternative for another tank and to see what other skimmers are on the market since the SSK-65 went up in price.
