I love Black Widow pencils. This Monarch set is a great addition to their lineup. Beautiful new colors - even and bright as always. Amazing price and Black Widow has so many colors that I haven't found in other brands. And their customer service is amazing and responsive.

I have always loved the Black Widow line of colored pencils. This latest Monarchs set brings the line up to 144 colors. I have attached my sample sheet. Black Widow never disappoints. The innovative and creative color names continue in this Monarch pack. There are many pastel and bright colors in the set. Customer service is also excellent. The colors are creamy and dreamy. I received my new Black Widow Monarch colored pencils on Sunday and started coloring right away. As an avid adult colorist, I use the "3 color blending" technique to enhance my images. This means using a combination of dark, medium and light pens from the same color group to make the shadows and highlights look more realistic. I love Black Widow pencils. Although these are budget crayons, they are a pleasure to use. They are wax based but not so soft that they cannot be used for small parts. I have all of the Black Widow pencil sets (three original sets plus two skin tone sets). This latest set, The Monarchs, completes the color spectrum on offer. I just received this on my way to work and I have to say I was very disappointed. They have been placed in a large box without any packaging material and of course the glass looks awful. Looks like someone put it on their knee and tried to bend it in half. As someone who likes to keep crayons in cans, this is annoying. If you are looking for a unique pencil set, the Black Widow Monarch pencils are for you. First of all you can't go wrong with the packaging, they come with a protective case. I have all of the Monarch/Black Widow Colored Pencil Sets including the new Skin Tone sets. I have all Black Widow sets except fair skin and am looking forward to the release of the Monarch set. I only use them to color books. Black widows are classified as soft wax sticks. The core is harder than Prismacolor but softer than other soft wax pencils in the same price range. Not too hard and not too soft, just right.
