Excellent performance is best in compass

Excellent compass with preset declination which for some reason the company doesn't report. This is a feature of their more expensive compasses. This is the best compass to teach scouts map and compass skills. We use them to search for missing persons at our local fire department.

The best of the TruArc range

Other TruArc ranges may be more compact and older ranges more powerful, but this one strikes the perfect balance. Not the cheapest, but not too many in one either. Global needle and additional magnet for EMI protection. It responds quickly, well suited for orienteering or hiking in the past. Cool to have in a garbage bag.

Pros
  • Great design
Cons
  • Replacement available

Useless for bushwhacking.

What I like about this compass is the built in magnifying glass which makes it very easy to read the rotating dial. What I don't like is that the knob turns too easily and I have to constantly confirm that my bearing is still installed. With my Silva compass I can set the bearing and be sure it stays set until I change it. Not so with my Brunton Tru-arc. This is my second Brunton Tru-arc and both compasses have the same issue.

Pros
  • Highly rated by testers for stability and durability
Cons
  • Easily repairable

Inexpensive compass with global needle and quality issues.

Compass generally worked well with 3 negatives. On the plus side, the compass is relatively inexpensive, with hopefully global needle and declination correction. The main disadvantage is the weak construction: This causes the compass level and map meridian disc to jump out of the base plate when pressure is applied to the compass from above, which can easily happen if you wear the compass in your pants. Pocket. Minor downsides are the difficult fine-tuning of the declination correction and the…

Medium all-round compass.

This compass is not a very good product. Bubbles in 8 months? Garbage! Nothing is earth shattering or worthy of mounting a soapbox and preaching navigational truth. Clean and simple, this is an easy-to-use straight-line compass that works well in cases where accuracy isn't critical but quickly gets a reasonably accurate course. In short, if you're determined to use a compass instead of GPS (nothing wrong with that) and need to quickly get the navigation information you need, this is a fair…

Precise but difficult

Brunton's TruArc 10 is a bit disappointing. While capable of amazing accuracy, I'm convinced that whoever designed certain aspects of this compass never really needed to use it. To function properly as a ground plane compass, the body must be clear, with red lines on the underside that align with the map's north-south grid lines when the body is rotated to obtain map bearings. The underside of the compass case is covered with a white sticker and the only reference lines are on the numbered part

Pros
  • Hands-free operation
Cons
  • Poorly thought out

Attractive design features, but quality problems?

I purchased two Brunton TruArc compasses from Revain, Model 20 and Model 10. Model 20 did not have any of the quality issues reported by another reviewer for this model. However, the Model 10 did. The first compass I received had an orientation needle contour offset of about +3 degrees, even though the declination was set to zero. I returned it to Revain and they replaced it. The second TruArc10 was level but showed a strong downward slope towards the red end of the needle. I figured the needle

I don't usually write reviews but I feel this review is necessary due to other negative reviews. I want to make sure this article gets the credit it deserves.
