I love the function and design of this compass but I left it on the boat for the winter and it has a pinhole. It looks like something either fell on it (I don't know what could) or it froze, expanded and broke. There was a tiny hole and the glass was chipped like it had been shot with a BBS as I'm not sure if it was frozen or not. I only give it three stars, otherwise it would have been more.

Big Small Compass

I installed it on a 1988 Boston Whaler Outrage. I installed a larger GPS/fishing sonar and waterproof radio mount. To do this, the factory-installed compass had to be relocated. Installation was easy. The location and cable port are well designed, making it easy to sneak below decks. The flashlight is LED, which increases its durability and lifespan, and also limits battery drain. It glows green, and I prefer red. The body is strong and durable. He didn't move 3 feet of the sea. So far, so…

Some problems right from the start

The problems started as soon as I received this product. I tried to open the plastic box with my hands but to no avail. Tried with scissors, no bones. The next day the office knife failed. Nothing in my toolbox opened it. Didn't try to detonate capsules. The wife intervened with a meat cleaver. I sat down with the instructions in fine print, saw how super complicated the installation was going to be (like building a linear accelerator from scratch), and my eyes glazed over. Maybe when I get my…

First compass I've found that works in a car.

Works well - good enough in the car too. I drive a Passat and so far every compass I've tried has been completely inaccurate. This was close after calibration. It's still offset slightly when facing south, but close enough to get the job done. Comes with DC pigtails, but you need to provide your own plug that you need to connect. If you don't plug it in it still works, all you have to do is turn on the green night light. In the car at night it will be a bit distracting. Note: It's big. Much…

good compass; Works well

I have two of these. Bought both at the same time. One is on my console, the other is on my nose. I really like them except ONE thing: I don't like how easily the compass can be removed from its base. Just press both super handy little "buttons" (one on each side of the compass) and it pops out of the base. The bow mount is particularly vulnerable to greedy onlookers. Also, in fairly rough water, the boat bounced off the base of the bow compass. Luckily he jumped in the boat and not in the…

This compass works great in my car (I like the compass in my car what can I say), but mainly because my car doesn't seem to bother the compass at all, which is very surprising. If you get the wrong heading, it's a location/environment issue, not the compass in general. I didn't have to use compensators, but it's nice to know they are (the reason I bought this particular compass). I used a cheap hand held compass to determine the severity of the magnetic interference at the installation site and

Expensive for a compass but very good.

I use this in my pickup truck. It's nice, big, and easy to read at a glance while driving. It is well cushioned for normal highway or city driving. It seems well made and durable. My copy has no blemishes and is a nice addition to my truck. There is no freeze warning in the manual so I assume this is normal in cold temperatures. I bought it because I got annoyingly lost at night in an unfamiliar area with no GPS or phone and couldn't see the stars to find the Polaris. A compass would be very…
