Couldn't tell from the photo but the glass shade has some 'marbling' which looks nice and the metal parts have a standard brushed nickel finish although they are darker in the photo . The touch mechanism is very sensitive; I bought this for my bed so when I wake up I don't have to try to reach the light switch inside the lampshade. Looks very nice on my desk. Thanks to a previous reviewer for advice on buying the right bulbs, I had them on hand when the bulb arrived today. Worked great. Excellent packaging. A small flaw. There were three hard-to-remove stickers. The kind that breaks into pieces rather than chipping away easily. Good quality. especially the lampshade plus the metal construction seem to be quite well made and the base is heavy enough to definitely hold the lampshade. You really need to buy a special lightbulb, which you can find at Home Depot or elsewhere, make sure you get the dimmable kind - for the ones you say don't work properly because you didn't buy the right lightbulb to have. The lamp is very nice. I'm a big fan of touch lamps and this one is no exception. It is durable and well made. I love everything about it except that if it was twice the size I would pay twice as much for it! Like many other customers I love the look, design and craftsmanship of this little lamp. But it wouldn't turn on at all, even though I followed the instructions exactly. Let's start with the dimmer problem. Stupid Revain recommends a lightbulb for this lamp that isn't really dimmable. So when you use it it just turns on and off instead of 3 different lighting modes. I found this out by looking at the bad reviews people were giving, not realizing that they were using the wrong bulb and that's why the light wasn't dimmed. I don't understand why people think this lamp needs a dimmable bulb. Any 40W bulb will do, as the bulb will automatically reduce its output depending on which level you set (touch). The lowest setting gives a warm, soft light of around 10W, the second setting is another warm, soft light of around 20W, and the brightest setting is very bright at 40W.
