I have several African cichlids from 4 to 7 inches. The two large sizes are great for this fish size. One of my 7 inch fish got stuck in the medium size and it took me forever to get it out. It tore it apart very well as the inside is very rough and jagged. So I only use the 2 largest sizes. Love them even though I bought 3 of these 8 sets for a 37 gallon aquarium. Lots of hiding spots. I use the smaller two stones in another tank with smaller fish.

I purchased this quality stone set for my freshwater African cichlid tank last June and couldn't be happier. I have since sold my African cichlids and started a saltwater system so I now use some of these rocks in my smaller freshwater aquarium. They love my down jackets too! However, they really are fantastic for minimizing aggression in an African cichlid community. Just make sure you separate line of sight as much as possible, otherwise they wouldn't function as separate areas as intended.

At first I was very pleased to receive this large set at such a price. I was expecting the insides of the rocks to be rough but it will cut through any long fins in an instant. I soaked them in hot water for over an hour, cleaned and rinsed thoroughly, scraped off any loose particles from the inside to smooth them out a bit and placed them in my aquarium. DO NOT BUY! As another reviewer said, it's very rude. When I wash it off, pieces of it fall off. I couldn't make it smooth. It's rougher than pumice! I decided to try it in my tap tank anyway. Would give 5 stars but as ALL said they are ROUGH. I didn't have sandpaper, so I used kitchen utensils with flat ends and round tips to go over it like I would carve. Back and forth until smooth. I thought they would be slick - how wrong I was! I spent an average of 30 minutes on each file to fish-proof it. They are very rough - imagine the roughest sandpaper. Then add sharp sand.
