Great little recorder that

Great camera and voice recorder for what it was designed for. However, when you start comparing it to other options that cost a lot more, you might start to find limitations. The Q8 is designed for killer sound and three-angle video performances (intimate, normal, stage). Excellent for capturing auditions at a fraction of the cost of a dedicated capture device (like the Zoom H6) versus a DSLR for video. Don't expect the Q8 to produce stunning, cinema-quality video clips - it's not made for…

When it worked it was great.

I bought this microphone for a field camera because I knew exactly what it was and that I was going to get great audio and video. With what can I use the driver to use it as a webcam/microphone. And it worked exactly as expected, EXACTLY 1 YEAR. This month has been 1 year since I received the Q8 and I intended to use it for my final exams but the day I started recording the Q8 just died. I sent an email to support that said "don't email anyone else, we don't care" (rather than politely…

Fixed wide angle, only 3MP, no optical zoom

Fisheye is really annoying. The non-detachable wide-angle lens adds a noticeable curve to all images captured. This effect can be reduced with digital zoom, but the already dubious video quality deteriorates noticeably with digital zoom at the lowest level. like a webcam). Again, the wide-angle is a weak point, because in small spaces or situations where you want to get closer, it's difficult to position your subject so that your subject takes up the entire screen (like a tabletop full of…

Wasn't reliable; very little documentation

I bought this camera with great expectations as it came highly recommended for music events. I ended up sending it back because it just wasn't reliable as a live feed camera. Advantages: sound, possibility to change microphones easily, recording quality, "all in one". can't reliably get it to work as a live cam, limited zoom, limited documentation. Ultimately, the problem I'm having may be due to the lack of documentation and my own inexperience. But the problem boiled down to this: I got…

  • you could have chosen a newer model

Radio DJ and I'm a music producer . What I like is the lack of buttons. It's almost impossible to screw up this camera! You get your money's worth. I sat at the local casino at this St. Patrick's Day concert and taped our entire show! It's amazing how these mics pick up any instrument! Now we record every session in my studio and listen to it IMMEDIATELY afterwards. Just pull out "Extreme PRO 64GB SanDisk" and plug it straight into my Mac Mini. I know it's a small fisheye lens. I studied it…

Pros
  • Quality build
Cons
  • Available in white only

The reason I bought this particular camera is the XLR inputs. I've used condenser mics and output sound from digital and analog mixers with great success. Sounds good. But some aspects of VIDEO are seriously lacking in this camera. Ironically, even for a Zoom camcorder, the zoom feature is pretty weak. It has 5 fixed positions, from close-up to wide-angle. It is suitable for musical performances when you need a camera close to the performers. At a distance of more than 15 feet, it seems that…

GREAT sound, the rest BAD

I really wish I could give this camera a higher rating. I'm a classical musician and the sound quality from a smartphone or consumer camcorder just doesn't match what I'm doing. I bought this Zoom Q8 on the recommendation of a colleague. The sound is as close to pro level as you can get for a small sub-$500 camera and on par with other Zoom audio recorders (I have an H4). The camera is small and compact. and light weight. Those working with an electronic keyboard or an external set of…
