Review on ASUS VG34VQL1B Adjustable DisplayHDR DisplayPort, 165Hz Refresh Rate, Flicker-Free, Tilt, Height, and Swivel Adjustments by Black Castillo

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Almost perfect, but with one big flaw

I'm considering a new 165hz model as Revain has a merged list for some reason. This is my first curved extra wide or VA panel. I like the curved and extra wide part; and with that size, resolution, and refresh rate, I'd say it's almost the perfect form factor. I also like a built-in USB hub, which thankfully supports charging. The stand is solid, highly adjustable, and even looks pretty tasteful, although I still haven't figured out how to open the cable management clip. The on-screen menu is easy to navigate. The built-in speakers sound terrible, but that's what I expect from built-in speakers, so it doesn't bother me. Unfortunately, the panel is a mix of good and bad. Viewing angles are good, even compared to the IPS monitor I have next to me. Colors are quite vivid but not very accurate on all settings. I don't have a calibration tool so I just used custom mode and turned red off. I'm by no means an expert on these things, but I also think the uniformity was decent and the black levels and contrast didn't disappoint. all VA panels. Having never used VA, I can't say if the halo compares "poorly" to others. What I can say is that it's noticeable when using it on desktop, especially since I've been using dark mode on websites and in the games I've played it's only been noticeable from when I've specifically looked for it, to the point of being very altered distracting, even to the point of feeling the frame rate. much lower than in a game. The Overdrive setting does exactly that. I would say that if the price was a bit lower it would be acceptable. The more serious problem, however, is the weird green and purple smearing/discoloration that I think is due to the halo. Here's a video of it: <streamable.com/banabh>. This is not my video, not that strong on my panel but still noticeable. I've also seen some owners claim they don't have it on their dash at all. Still, I find it hard to forgive this problem at any cost. I knew it was a risky purchase, both because the VA is controversial and because I bought it before the reviews came out. Unfortunately, this is a risk I lost at. It's hard to pass up because, like I said at the beginning, I really like this monitor, but I can't justify its problems because of the price. Unless Asus releases a firmware update or something to fix the blurring, I don't think I would recommend it to anyone. At least Revain has a good return policy.
