I was nervous that it would be cheap/bad material but they are really very good! They are a bit short but very soft and wash well. My son didn't like the colors of his football shirt this season so he asked for rainbow socks instead and I liked that they're still a rainbow hue but don't look terribly garish. For football socks (and over shin guards), as mentioned, they are slightly shorter. He wore them to school today (wrong pair for a stupid day) and the photos I got from his teacher just an hour later showed his mid-calf socks so they definitely don't stay in place but are very cute and pleasantly comfortable! My son is a size 9 and they are a bit big for him.
