The smell is very unpleasant. It's watery, so start on the scalp and let it drip down. I have very long hair and only needed one pack for one use. Read the instructions! I set the timer to 'shampoo and rinse' for 20 minutes the first time and it was the longest 20 minutes of any shower. I rinsed and cleaned and it felt like an hour had passed but I still had 15 left! The instructions say shampoo and rinse for 5 minutes and repeat twice. You wash your hair 4 times with shampoo and rinse for 35 minutes. And the saying goes, if you have long or thick hair, make it longer! I am really impressed with the results and am planning another procedure. The paper says that when exposed to this product, the dye molecules shrink and if you don't wash them off, they grow back larger and you get stuck on them!
