Hard drive holder tasting notes - plus CD and DVD drives including Plextor - plus security update

I have many hard drives, about 100 that are over 20 years old. This thing works for most of them, and if your drive is functional, it will boot right away. USB 3.) actually offers faster transfer speeds if your drive supports it. I've tried a dozen of these different brands and models and this is the best I've tried. Similar to others but internal code is better. Much better. In fact, it recognizes older optical drives, including Plextor drives (I've tried it on several models, including Plextor Professional) if you need them for accurate CD mastering. This is very important - most add-on adapters mess this up. Not only does it tell you which CD drive is connected, it extracts the model number from the drive and turns it into a USB version. w00t. Normally I would give this a glowing review. But it has a security flaw. To be honest, most of these adapters have the same disadvantage. When connecting a full-size IDE drive, the molex connector has ribs on both sides for removal. The problem is that the rib puts a lot of pressure on the connector. Let me tell you, if you're dying to spin up a ten-year-old hard drive with *your* data, this is the last thing you need. It's a short circuit caused by that molex connector. death spark. I'm not joking. There are two things you can do (and only do this if you are comfortable with the tools). You can carefully trim the rib on the side of the connector - be careful not to cut the wire - you can buy a much better quality Molex connector on eBay for a few bucks that doesn't have the ribs. Test your connector with a multimeter if you really want to be on the safe side. Once I cut the edge of the plastic this thing works like a dream. Buy two.
