This roomy backpack and tarpaulin feels sturdy. As you can see from the photos, it can hold a laptop and some books, and there is plenty of room for accessories in the pockets. The side pockets are high enough to hold pencils. However, be aware that if you have a large laptop and plan to use the back compartment to store it, it may not fit or it may become very cramped. My laptop turned out to be ONLY tight and very comfortable; Still, the small velcro doesn't reach all the way up to hold it. For reference, when the laptop is closed, its width is about 9&1/2 or 9&3/4 inches instead of 14&1/2 inches. in length. I didn't notice either, but the buckle strap closures are button rather than magnetic closures, which I would have preferred.
