for me these are very simple balaclavas. I don't want them getting in my ears and they don't want that. You'll get very wet with sweat in our summer climate, but that's to be expected. They're not very snug on my head and the short seams have little protruding corners, but since I wear them under a helmet I don't care. I definitely wouldn't expect them to be used as standalone headgear, but as a helmet liner they are definitely worth the price.
