I guess I can be called a "pioneer" when it comes to the conversion to LED headlights as I missed out on the HID conversion right away. In the early days of LED retrofitting, there were ill-fitting assemblies, flickering, premature death, and poor light output. There are now some really good and reliable devices on the market, Allek H11, H8, H9 LED headlight bulbs, 2pcs belong to this group. Allek devices are doing well at first. Materials, fit and finish feel like the best devices I've seen. I was a bit disappointed when I saw the heatsink part of the build. In general, you want a material that acts as a good heat conductor/heatsink, and you want as much surface area as possible to transfer heat to the surrounding air. Allek opted for active cooling rather than just a passive heatsink, but the solution is a bit odd. The fan is basically a hub with tiny, short blades - since the idea is to move as much air as possible, this design isn't exactly perfect. While the heatsink is relatively easy to manufacture, it's not really designed for optimal heat transfer. All of this results in a tiny fan that has to spin at up to 12,000 rpm? I'm not sure if the fan uses a sleeve bearing, a ball bearing, or two ball bearings, but that much heat at this speed is no guarantee of long life. While LEDs could theoretically last over 20,000 hours, it's hard to imagine fans lasting that long (especially in cars with high underhood temperatures). Now to the actual characteristics of the headlights. The color temperature of 6000K approaches the blue range. The light output is good. The brightness is only average. While better than standard halogen bulbs, it is a little dimmer than some of the other LED bulbs on the market. However, the price is good, the Toyota installation was good and they did not flicker.
