Review on πŸ“± RCA Voyager Pro 7-inch Tablet with Keyboard Case, Multi-Touch Display, Android Go Edition (8.1) - Purple by Dee Holt

A 3-star tablet to live with. Price just right

No ifs or buts, this is an Android device that costs less than $50. Screen and battery life are at the bottom of the Android gene pool. So why give 3 stars instead of 1? Because this little device knows where it stands and the price reflects that. It has a useful feature and that is the main reason someone like me would even consider buying one of these. It includes a collapsible hard case for the keyboard. The tiny 7-inch tablet makes this a rarity. The keyboard is very tactile and responsive, and they have the foresight to use a metal base plate (bolted to the trunk) to add a bit more weight to counteract the heaviness of tablets in keyboard cases. Kudos to RCA for that! The machine came with Android 8.1 (Oreo) from the factory, despite what it said on the product page (6.0, last checked). This is Android Go designed to make the best of limited RAM and storage resources as is the case with this 1GB/16GB device. Voyager Pro 7 supports SDXC cards, so storage space is not an issue. Performance is what you'd expect from a device with such low specs, but Android Go helps in that regard. I have disabled many Google Suite apps (like Gmail) to keep background processes to a minimum. My primary use will be as an ultraportable SSH device. And for that purpose there are some caveats. For some strange reason, Termius and JuiceSSH can't send a space to my SSH sessions. This applies to both software and physical keyboards. The physical keyboard on this one is USB via proprietary pins on the edge of the device rather than the usual Bluetooth connection associated with other keyboard cases. Both of the above SSH apps recognize both software (gboard and SwiftKey available on the Play Store) and physical keyboards in their UI, but refuse to translate the character in the SSH console. By any means I could think of, I installed Termux and used it for SSH in my respective Linux machines. Works great! I've even adopted the Termux:Float add-on, which allows you to launch a session in a floating opaque window on top of your other applications. So for my particular intended use case, this works. For the price, you won't find anything that offers the same typing experience in such a small package. Giving less than 3 stars would be unfair. To give more would be a lie. However, don't expect it to replace your mid-range device any time soon.
