These are needed to hold the inserts in place. The small ties or loops that come with the comforter are not enough, especially for a large pad. My duvet only has four drawstrings, and these little pins keep them secure. I put them in so that you don't see them and I hardly feel them; although you can of course feel them if you look for them or touch the corners of the ceiling. The needle is long and fairly thick, making it easy to push through the insert. There's also a release button so you don't have to worry about them coming loose and it makes them easy to remove if needed. Personally, I don't like using a duvet without it, otherwise the insert will constantly shift inside.
