August 25, 2018 - I had some problems with this media player and other similar ones with the same chipset, but I found a solution from the manufacturer. You must use them with drives configured for Master Boot Record (MBR), not the newer GPT (GUI Partition Table). For this reason, only drives up to 2 TB are read. MBR does not support more than 2TB. I thought it was the drive brand. Toshiba worked, but Western Digital didn't. I then went into the disk manager and found that the configuration varies by manufacturer, but all work when converted. I used FAT32, NTFS and exFat formats. No problem. GPT is the issue. I hope this helps people who are tearing their hair out trying to figure out why their hard drives aren't working. Now to my original review. I'll click on high scores to be brief. The Micca Spec G2 plays many different formats. The ones I tested: .mkv; Standard definition file (480P) DVD.iso, video .mp4, .mp3, all from flash drive. They worked perfectly. Then I took the files that would be on the DVD - not an .iso file but a real folder found on the media itself. I told the device to play the folder (sort of) and it played it as if it were a DVD or .iso file, menus and all. Then I saw an optical drive option in the menu, so I grabbed a Samsung USB Blu-ray Reader/Writer and plugged it in. The Micca Speck played standard definition DVDs with no problems. However, when I tried to play the Blu-ray disc, I received a "file reading error". I tried a few Blu-ray discs to see if it was the wrong disc. Obviously this box doesn't have the power to decode Blu-ray discs, but I can easily play HD videos ripped from Blu-ray. It can also be compatible with Samsung Reader/Writer. I have not tried any other brand of external Blu-ray player/burner with it. Subtitles and Audio Tracks: I read another review that said a person can only read one audio track. That wasn't the case with me. I could read audio tracks in two languages. I only had two tracks in the .mkv file I used, so I can't say if it will play more. The second track was dubbed in German and the volume was lower than the main English track, but that could just be how the original CD was recorded. Accessing subtitles was problematic for me. I couldn't get it to work, but maybe I didn't find the right key sequence. This device is pretty intuitive. Conclusion: It's small, economical and just works. I liked it so much that I bought two more. They make excellent fillers for stockings.
