I'm pretty sure the returns or negative reviews didn't read the manual because the sound is great for the price. The key here is that this device actually handles raw PCM audio (which is amazing). Hardware wise it's better than my Bose which costs 3x the price - the 4x full range speakers and 2x tweeters work well together and my father in law said he could buy the base unit but it's just as good. It was well received as a birthday present and was used immediately. I can get another one. For a quick rundown, simply plugging into a Samsung TV didn't work and I was ready to return it. But when the Samsung TV was set to PCM and external speakers, it worked fine. Great sound for the money. It also worked the first time on my father-in-law's cell phone. I forgot to add: this is better than others in the same class because it has 6 drivers and the tweeters make a big difference. Add a separate base module and you have a decent system with hardware that's worth what we're paying and not much. The sound chip really works. My Bose sounds a little better in some cases, but it's definitely louder and clearer so partygoers won't complain. And Bose turns on and off with the TV. So there are some downsides, but it's a big deal.
