This worked very well for us. We put it on an old worn mattress. My husband didn't want to give up the mattress as it is still comfortable for him and he had a hard time finding another mattress that he also liked. The only thing I was annoyed with was how the mattress looked, worn in places and unable to clean or repair. That solved the problem and we are both happy with it. He likes the comfort and I like the nice new sleek look. FYI we had no problems landing. It's not a thick 12" mattress, but I think the cover fits a 14" mattress VERY easily and maybe a 15" mattress too. Getting on the mattress is a bit tricky as it only opens on one side. lifted the mattress and moved it up and down.
