I think I was mis-advised and thought you should get 2 inches (according to your waist) above your pants waist measurement in the belts. I wear 34W pants and ordered a 36W inch belt. So if you order this belt and want to make it longer, order two SIZES larger than your pant size, ie if you wear 34" pants, order a 38" belt.
