Cardboard is denser than other scrapers and also has varying degrees of tightness of corrugation. Cats seem to like it a lot as it doesn't break easily. I think this gives them more resistance and thus satisfies their desire to scratch better. They also work as triple scrapers. I took out two scratching posts myself and left one in the box. The resulting higher edge of the drawer makes it appear more like a bed for her. They used to love lying on it, but now it seems easier for them.
