For those who don't understand why the Y connector is so short, this cable is ideal for connecting devices such as radios and mobile phones to mixers or portable stereo recorders. In this case I'm taking audio from another device and putting it into the mic/line inputs of the portable recording device. It can also be used in reverse, where two mono audio sources are combined into one stereo input jack. The "Y" separation is short because the 1/4" jacks that the cable connects to are side by side on these types of devices. If you are connecting a device such as a laptop or phone to separate standalone If you want to connect powered speakers, this cable obviously needs an additional 1/4" extension cable on one (or possibly both) 1/4" ends to bridge the extra distance between the speakers. You can find a splitter cable where the fanout is closer to the 1/8" end of the connector, but then you essentially always have two cables going to the device. By using this cable along with another 1/4" extension cable, most cables can permanently stowed behind one of the speakers after separation. Then you have a small cord going to your device, resulting in less weight and clutter in areas around the device and generally a cleaner solution that's easier to work with in the long run. but I haven't had it long enough to know how well it will hold up over time.
