I made the mistake of vacuuming up some mothballs that some genius put in the sofa I bought. The smell was so strong that I actually parted from the couch, but the smell clung to EVERYTHING (including my vacuum cleaner). After replacing 3 filters in the vacuum cleaner and thoroughly cleaning them, I put some of them in a bag to get rid of residual odors. I am happy to report that the smell has finally disappeared from the vacuum cleaner. Since my sports bag was in the same room as the sofa, the interior still smelled of mothballs. I'll put in some scented pearls and hope for the best. They smell amazing and the smell really lingers.
