The fit, finish and high quality components used in the FA7 drew me to this purchase! The Knowles components installed in this IEM are the same as in other models that cost 1-2 times more. When connected to an iPhone the sound was good, but I also wanted to hear the difference when using a portable DAC/amp (not that you really need them, for maximum gain/volume was enough for me). Fiio Q1: The sound was noticeably cleaner with only a slight increase in treble boost. What you can achieve is fairly high gain and cleaner, more polished mids and highs. As mentioned in other reviews, the mid-bass of these IEMs can be a bit strong. Not to the point where the mids are smeared, just before that. If you want a more polished sound with a bit more positive mid-to-treble boost, could you consider Q1.Q5 (with A5) + FA7? I can only say WOW! You still get strong mid-bass levels, but the mids and highs are brilliant! I can see why the Q5 is Fiios flagship DAC/amp. It's expensive, but compared to other brands of comparable quality, you're $$$ ahead. With the Q1 you should be connected to your iPhone, with the Q5 I paired it with BT and there was no noticeable degradation in sound quality. It's an expensive setup (for me) but I'll cry once but reap the benefits for a while. So my verdict is clear. I don't follow the data and benchmarks, but I try to buy the best value for money. My ears confirm that matching the FA7 to the Q5 is not necessary for good sound quality and a comfortable listening experience (on iPhone). These headphones make a great standalone device for the iPhone. However, if you have the resources and plan to use larger headsets, or just want to get your tunes up to the highest quality (IMHO), then consider the Q5 as the vehicle to get you there with the FA7.
