After two ankle reconstruction surgeries and additional foot revascularization, I needed something to reduce swelling and return to normal activity levels. I have washed and worn these socks 4 times so far. They seem to hold their elasticity well, comparable to the orthopedic compression stockings that were provided to me in my doctor's physical therapy department. They managed to reduce the swelling in my ankle during a 9 hour work day. If you have a petite build, the top band may be too tight and uncomfortable as it sits just behind your knee. Loosening it through the calf to improve this fit issue reduces the effectiveness of these socks so I wouldn't recommend it for anyone who is vertically impaired (i.e. <5'4").
