Review on Auto Meter 2242 Short Sweep Electric Oil Pressure Sender: Optimal Performance Guaranteed by Chris Beals

Revainrating 1 out of 5

Terrible quality control. FIFTH bad sender! AVOID.

This is the fourth one I've bought because the others broke. When I got my car it was defective. I bought one (#2). The second lasted several months. Since I was limited in time, I just bought another one after it broke after a few weeks (#3). At this point I wanted something different because it's going to be silly, but I put it aside again and didn't have time to play around with it, so I got something else (#4). That of course failed DURING my race. Yes, being an idiot and again procrastinating until the last second, I got another one (#5). It went wrong. I don't know if they have production issues or what. I even checked by shorting the wire to the case (with an alligator clip) to make sure it wasn't a case grounding issue like so many others and the sensor worked fine and I had proof, that the grounding was fine. Every new sensor worked first and then failed. My system starts at 75psi and runs at 45-50psi so I know I'm not overshooting the gauge and I know the oil is clean and not clogged. Unit. ABOMINABLE. There is NO EXCUSE for this type of failure, there have been many times. Update: I called Autometer and spoke to someone from tech support (instantly, no waiting, nice guy on the other end of the line). He stated that they had problems with some vehicles and certain harmonics that resulted in station rejections. He recommended remote mounting of the transmitter. He sympathized, but it was the only solution he had. I didn't want to buy ANOTHER transmitter (would be #6!) and I didn't want to "remote mount" the transmitting device as that is unacceptable. I didn't have much time so I bought a Vision Series VDO Mechanical Sensor, installed it and had no problems with it. I wish I could do it initially instead of doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result (isn't that what they call "crazy"?).

Pros
  • Easy to read control panel
Cons
  • Easy repairability
