Works perfectly! - Interior

When I bought a used car it only had 1 key. After my sister waited over 2 hours for Triple A to unlock her car I finally decided to get a second key no matter the cost. When researching the options available, it seemed to me that I would have to pay anywhere from $29 to $129 depending on the source. I wasn't sure if the key fob contained an electronic device that needed to be programmed just to start the car, but I took a chance on getting a blank key with no electronics for my 2012 Scion XD. At this price, there are no significant costs even in the event of a failure. As it turns out, the only function of my factory key fob is to remotely lock/unlock the doors and turn on the alarm. I took my newly purchased key blank with no electronics to a local hardware store and they cut it for $1. When I put it in the ignition it worked just as smoothly as the factory key. I will buy another one and remove the real key from the fob to carry in my wallet. Probably most cars need some kind of electronic pulse from the key fob to activate the ignition. I know my Town Car did this, but unless your ignition is electronically locked, having an extra key is ideal. Just as important as a blank key is someone who can cut the key properly, so take them to a place where they're good with keys.
