I love this carrier! I have used it for my cat and small dog. My dog can be a restless poo so I wrapped the pillow in the carrier with a puppy pad. Then I'll just let it go when we get home. It has plenty of vented "windows" for airflow, but it's also closed enough to keep my pets safe. You can open from the side or from the top. The top opening is great for petting and comforting while my kids are in it. If for any reason you don't want to take your pet out, you can simply open the lid to allow the vet to access the pet. This gives your pet some security. If they have to come to a specific exam, they can easily be fetched back. Definitely recommend this carrier.
