Bought to replace an outdoor outlet cover that won't close when plugged in

I needed an outdoor outlet cover that would close even when something goes wrong – something connected output. This case does. I have a sprinkler control system which unfortunately is outside so it stays plugged into an outside outlet 24/7. The lid I replaced wouldn't close when something was plugged in, causing the wasps to build a nest in the lid, which was fine. This cover has detachable plastic tabs on the top (or bottom, depending on how you orient it) and sides, so you can snap it in place even when something is plugged into an outlet. You can also lock it to prevent unauthorized persons (neighbors, children, passers-by on the street, wasps, etc.) from touching your plug/socket. Installation instructions could be better. If you know how to install it, it's not difficult. If you can replace the normal output bezel, you can install it. However, there are interchangeable panels that allow the cover to be used over GFCI outlets, regular outlets, and a light switch. How to turn them off isn't explained and it took me a while to figure out how to do it properly so the lid fits snugly against the brick. There is a QR code in the instructions that takes you to tutorial videos, but I couldn't find any code on how to install this socket, so it didn't help much. Once you've changed the bezels, simply unscrew the old cover and screw this back on. While the tabs allow the lid to close when the socket is in use, it still leaves a reasonable amount of space around the wire for creatures and/or elements to enter. The hole is about 1" wide, so if your wire isn't 1" wide, there will be an open space around it. I sealed the open area around the wire with electrical tape. Not the most elegant option, but given the wasp situation, it had to be done. If you have outdoor outlet covers that won't close when in use and you have something plugged into the outlet most of the time, buy a cover. which closes (like this one). Then the wasps cannot use it as a canopy for their house. I will also put a lock on the lid for extra security, mainly against wasps.

Pros
  • High marks for grip and durability from testers
Cons
  • Not as thick as other options
