I've been using the PetSafe Inground Wireless Fence since 2003 when my wife brought home a puppy from a local dog shelter. We live in a village on a busy country road, and dogs without fences won't last long unless they're smart enough to learn early how to avoid the road. Our dog did a great job with the PetSafe fence and the fact that he is alive today is a great testament. The original receiver died after about 3-4 years of daily use and we replaced it with an additional receiver that a friend no longer needs after their dog passed away. . This lasted until last week (about 5-6 years) when I noticed our dog was getting too close to the fence wire and I knew the wire wasn't broken anywhere. I changed the batteries but the receiver still didn't work so I had to buy a new one. I'm not complaining, these receivers lasted many years longer than I expected. I am VERY happy with their quality. I was very disappointed that I couldn't find an older receiver that we have had for over 9 years that uses 2 flat nickel batteries. I don't like the look of the new receivers because the PetSafe battery wraps around the outside of the receiver and is therefore larger and bulkier. Our dog is only about 38 pounds and I don't want a huge, bulky receiver hanging around her neck. I was very reluctant to purchase this new style BUT let me say that when I got my hands on it I was surprised and pleased with the size and appearance of the receiver. It's only slightly larger and after clipping it to my dog's pink collar I didn't even notice a difference in appearance after about 5 minutes. While I still like the old Receiver style more, this new style is really ok. I've seen people complain about having to use disposable PetSafe batteries with the receiver. With my old receiver I used two Engergizer flat batteries for about 4-5 months (maximum). I believe they were 2032 style. Last time I bought them they were about $4.25 for 2 at Wal-Mart. I bought 2 replacement PetSafe batteries from Revain for about $6. So if these batteries last as long as the old ones, I'm actually saving a few bucks a year. In the worst case, I will break even. So, again, I was initially skeptical about this product just because I liked the old style more, but my fears were unfounded and that's a great thing. If the quality stays the same as the rest of my PetSafe products from last year, I won't need another receiver for a few years!
