I'm actually a pencil lover, but lately I've broadened my artistic horizons. After seeing some beautiful drawings in such a limited charcoal/pastel palette I wanted to play with it and ordered this set (along with other charcoal items from this company including charcoal blocks). For sharpening I used a stationery knife and sandpaper. these - DO NOT put them in an electric sharpener. A hand sharpener might work, YMMV. I found them to have a bit of a learning curve, but after a bit of practice I quickly drew some fun easy stuff. You'll start to get used to using black pencils for shadows and white pencils for highlights (although erasing works well too). Brown and brown pencils are great for medium tones. I can't say how they compare to similar items or professional pencils, but they seem good to me. I also recommend that you get an eraser and some not-so-smooth drawing paper with it. I also plan to try them with pre-colored paper - I think the white will really stand out on gray or tan paper.
