Review on Sangean PR D7 BK Rechargeable Portable by Rico Posley

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Very, very impressive. Rolls-Royce "Work Radio "

Very impressive little radio. My old cheap GE "work radios" (the radios I use for painting, sanding, repairing, etc.) were having problems and I wasted too much time setting them up, positioning them, and salvaging them. they tuned in - instead of working on any projects. I didn't use battery power so I always had to use an extension cord. It took some planning (long extension cords) if I wanted to listen to the radio on the go. These radios were over 25 years old and cost about $10 each. I couldn't find a good little radio in this price range today. I'm considering a Sony ICF38 for about $25 from Revain. (This model is similar in style to my old GE radios.) But some (not many) reviews complained of poor reception. The Sangean PR-D7 was twice the price but had digital tuning and rechargeable batteries - and had great reviews. So I decided to give it the green light for more freedom of movement when working in different locations (battery operated with built in charger) and supposedly good reception. I bought Panasonic Eneloop AA batteries as they had great reviews. (Apparently, to my surprise, not all batteries are the same.) This radio has excellent FM reception. Haven't used AM too much but seems fine. Setup and operation are easy. The sound quality is excellent, much better than I expected. No static or background noise, super clear, crisp sound. Digital seek tuning is very fast, and you can tune in automatically (where the tuner picks up the next strong signal) or manually (tuning to a station that doesn't sound very clear). The clock is equipped with a digital clock. a display that is always on and an orange backlight for 10 seconds when one of the buttons is pressed. 5 presets for FM are very convenient. (There's also 5 for AM.) The ability to charge batteries in the device itself is a big plus. I don't know yet how long the batteries will last on a single charge, but my experience with battery powered radios is that they don't last very long. So batteries are definitely the way to go. This radio makes it easy to charge the batteries without removing them from the device by simply plugging the radio into an outlet when the radio is off. A flashing red LED indicates the batteries are charging and goes off when fully charged (or it may stay on when fully charged - can't remember). It's a Rolls-Royce of "working radios" and a bit more expensive for that purpose. But it will save me a ton of time as I won't have to deal with poor radio reception or worry about extension cords. For a "working radio" I highly recommend this, although it's definitely expensive. . However, because it is so good, I will expand its use beyond my workshop/work/garden projects to everyday use on the patio, living room, etc. I was completely unfamiliar with the name Sangean until I started searching for AM. /FM portable devices on Revain. I wouldn't rule out the Sony ICF38 as I could buy two for the price of one Sangean PR-D7. But the Sangean exceeds my expectations on all fronts and will do double duty as a work and everyday radio.

Pros
  • 5 AM and 5 FM presets in memory
Cons
  • Can't remember
