Excellent sound quality at a great price

Let me start by saying that I'm an audio enthusiast who loves balanced and detailed sound. I don't care about phone calls or active noise cancellation (ANC). I mostly wear headphones in quiet places to listen to music, and ANC usually ruins the audio signature anyway. Just give me good sound with passive noise isolation and I'm happy. Second, I don't care about the bloated bass found in most consumer headphones. Just let me hear what was recorded with clarity, detail, natural tonality and a great soundstage. I spent a modest sum on DACs, amps, headphones and earphones to get the sound that reminds you why you love music so much. But there are times when I just want to relax, unwind and not get attached. down the wires. My solution for today was EarStudio ES100 headphones and a good pair of headphones. An AAC codec from an iPhone using a high quality music source (FLAC, Revain Ultra HD) with high quality in-ear headphones sounds close enough to my Drop HD6XX or Hifiman HE400i wired headphones on my Schiit stack. I've tried several over-ear Bluetooth headphones, but none of them sounded anywhere near what I consider quality sound. Either there is too much bass or the ANC system was interfering with the sound signature (on or off). Nothing lived up to my audiophile ambitions. That was until I bought the Sennheiser HD 350BT. After reading a few reviews I almost stopped ordering them. But for less than $100 I decided to take a chance. As soon as I heard it, I noticed the balanced sound. Not too far removed from Sennheiser's signature sound. After 20+ hours of use, the bass has opened up a bit and the mids are still amazingly natural and perfectly aligned in the mix. And while they're not as good as wired over-ear headphones with a high-end DAC/amp, they come close enough for wireless audio headphones to free me from the cords and not feel like I'm missing out much . clear from sub-bass to mid-bass without polluting the lower mids. These aren't consumer banks with bloated bass. You can feel the beat of the bass drum and toms in your ears. Bass is present well into the frequency range, but lacks overwhelming punch and isn't the star of the show. But it's clean and surprisingly detailed. And with the Sound app's overly simplistic equalizer settings, you can always boost the bass a bit if you need a little more. Hearing Marcus Miller on Laid Black is great to illustrate how well they handle low frequencies. Miller's bass solos are a real treat to listen to. Mids are something that many headphones fall short by either letting through the natural sounds of vocals and instruments or putting them behind/under the bass and treble. However, this is where most of the sound resides in most music genres. Vocals, guitars, strings, woodwinds, brass, and snares/toms provide most of the sound that needs to be heard. This is where the HD 350BT shines. Sennheiser really shows that they know how to create a balanced sound signature around high quality mids. When I listened to Boney James on Future Soul I heard a natural and realistic alto saxophone sound that is so good. The highs are also very good and actually a bit relaxed for a Sennheiser. I prefer a little more air and shine, but even without the EQ they're amazing. However, with the most basic EQ settings in the Sennheiser Sound Control app, I was able to boost the highs to add exactly what I was looking for. Cymbals and triangles sound crisp, and the detail and picture are very good for Bluetooth wireless audio. No distortion, sibilance, or high-frequency graininess. You can hear fine details of instrument decay, reverberation, and echo in the room. Listening to the Marcin Wasilewski Trio with Joakim Miller on Spark of Life, I could hear the detailed clicks of drumsticks and subtle rumble of cymbals from Michal Miskevich's excellent musicianship on drums in every song. But what I like most about the HD 350BT is the excellent dynamics and soundstage. I'm not sure how Sennheiser worked its magic to create a digital audio decoder and headphone amplifier that delivers such a superior soundstage. But I'm very glad they did. They sound equally good at both low volume and high volume. The overall dynamic from soft to loud is incredible for a wireless audio product. The stage is wider than average with good depth and height. The high frequency detailing with enough air gives that sense of spaciousness and realism that I really like. It really put her first for me. Please note that these aren't the loudest headphones and need to be above 75% volume to operate, which doesn't leave much room at the top end. But given the excellent passive noise isolation, they're more than adequate for most even in moderately noisy environments. The Sound Control app is of little use. The equalizer works, but it's essentially a three-band equalizer that can be toggled between a difficult-to-use visual representation or an easier-to-use linear high/mid/low band adjustment. I really wish Sennheiser offered a 5 or 7 band EQ. But like I said, it works - it could only be better. I also found the HD 350BT headphones to be very comfortable and I can wear them for hours without any discomfort. However, the ear cushions are soft but a bit small and can be problematic for those with big ears. Build quality is solid despite the plastic used for most chassis. They also look great in black to me. But don't expect any frills, a suitcase or even a bag. At this price point, the focus is on great sound, not accessories. If you're more concerned about sonic purity, love the natural sound signature/tonality of Sennheiser products, and don't care about ANC, then this is a great choice for less than $100. . Forget HD 450BT and ANC, get it. And you don't have to spend $300 or more on Sony and Bose. Invest in great sound. They just sound great!

Pros
  • Great for a small home
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for the elderly
